about

Grafton LP is the collective name of four electronic pieces that I developed whilst visiting the country city known as Grafton NSW. This is part of the Clarence Valley which includes the traditional land of Bundjalung, Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr people. in December 2016, I spent a lot of time here - particularly in at various spots near the Orara river which connects to the Clarence River. Its name is believed to stem from the indigenous word "Urara," which means "where the perch live." The particular place I spent the most time was in the traditional territory of the Gumbaynggirr people. This town of Grafton was similar to the one I grew up in and it sort of felt familiar. This was was a really difficult period, as someone who had played a big role in my life had died and I was looking to escape intense feelings of grief, and a growing sense of emotional crises. During this time, I couldn't be around people, so I spent a lot of time near the rivers in the area, learning their histories. The ecological ensoundings around me (river, insects, animals, cars) dissolved my introspection and expanded my cognition outwards. During this time, coupled with grief, were also feelings of alienation, as I became aware of how we contribute to the colonial and "romantic" abstraction of "nature" as something set-apart and, as sound artists, we often fetishise "natural sounds" in our work, with no consideration of how these connect to culture or country. All in all, these complicated notions helped me think about and feel something else (outside of neo-liberal individual self-hood), even if it was for a short while; these sensations, feelings and troubles have contributed to the formation of this series.
